A potter moving vertically up the stairs with a suitcase on his head does work . why ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Work = Force(Distance) Here, the force is exerted from the head to the suitcase to maintain balance and prevent it from falling. He travels a certain distance up the stairs while doing this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Going up the stairs makes the difference. We all know, W= Fx d x cosine of angle between them. And in going up he makes some angle which is why he does work rather when he moves along the ground because at that time the angle is 90 degree, and cosine(90) =0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Simple as the definition of work. He's applying a force to hte suitcase over a certain distance. \[W=Fd\] or\[W=\int Fdr\]
