Trigo help..principal solution!

OpenStudy (dls):

Question: Find the principle and general solution of : \[\LARGE cotx=-\sqrt{3}\]

OpenStudy (dls):

I've got -pi/6 as PS,but its given in the form 5pi/6 i know they wrote 2pi-pi/6 form but is mine wrong?It is nowhere given in that form in my book..does it make a difference?Like for sin PS can be from +pi/2 to -pi/2

I've learnt that you should always get your answer within the period. For sine/cos: 0 <= x <= 2*pi For tan: 0 <= x <= pi

OpenStudy (dls):

why so?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I didn't make the rule so I'm not sure exactly why. But I would say that if you write it like that it is in simplest form, and you always want to get your answers in the simplest form. 4/8 can be simplified to 1/2 and -pi/6 to 5pi/6. It will also help you since most of the trig tables are from 0 to 2pi :)

OpenStudy (dls):

okay

OpenStudy (dls):

but ill leave the question open for any better answers,if anyone has :) thanks though!
