What is the basic difference in gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The main difference is in the physical structure. Gram positive bacteria have an extra shell around them (peptidoglycan) and Gram negative bacteria do not. This shows up in a test when you stain the culture with saffron and then a violet dye. The Gram positive only show up the violet dye making them appear blue, whereas the Gram negative only display the saffron, making them appear red.

But peptidoglycan is present in both type of bacteria..soguy1971

yes it is present in both types,it is much bigger with gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria have a small peptidoglycan layer between the 2 cell membranes
