What is the role of the hippocampus in memory formation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It stores all of your memories. People with great memories would have enlarged hippocampus.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is responsible for your short term memory. In patient whose hippocampus is destroyed he will have totally amnesia of the short term events although he may remeber what happened long before the destruction of hippocampus he maynot remeber what happened immediately before and he cannot form new memories too And as pointed out correctly by the previous responder MiaS after a night of cramping the day before your exams the size of your hippocampus appears to be enlarged when assesed by an f-MRI (functional MRI) . In future this may be used to findout if you have really studied for your exam LOL
