The car weighs 2.25 tons ( US short ton ). The student finds the dimensions of each tire's footprint on the road is 12.5 cm X 16.5 cm. In pounds per square inch (psi), what is the total pressure the car exerts upon the road?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

isnt it just Force times cross sectional area? and i assume its distributed evenly over 4 tires

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 ton = 2000 pounds 1 cm = abt what .. 2.5 inches?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So i would take the area of all 4 tires?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2.5 cm = abt 1 inch .. thats better lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.54cm = 1in

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmm, i would find the force; divide by 4, and apply that to 1 tire .... then multily by 4 again just to be redundant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what it was! I had to take 4500/127.84 to get PSI. I was only doing one tire, it's all 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

either that, or take a cross sectional area, times 4; and apply the mg of the car

OpenStudy (amistre64):

:)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

.... tons is a force aint it; either way :) good job

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes :)
