Mathematics 17 Online
OpenStudy (angelwings996):

Write three rational expressions that simplify to x/x+1.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to get any equivalent expression, all you do is multiply top and bottom by the same number or expression

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so say you multiply top and bottom by 2, you would get this x/(x+1) 2x/(2(x+1))

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

does that make sense?

OpenStudy (angelwings996):

Okay, so I can multiply any number to get an equation that will simplify to x/x+1?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, another example below is multiplying top and bottom by 17 \[\Large \frac{x}{x+1}\] \[\Large \frac{17x}{17(x+1)}\]

OpenStudy (angelwings996):

Oh okay, thank you! I understand now

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

also, you can use algebraic expressions so instead of numbers like 2 and 17, you can use expressions like x, x+3, 2x-7, etc etc

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

just as long as you do it to BOTH top and bottom, it will remain equivalent
