The Phoenicians thought that they would better influence other cultures by setting up towns and cities across the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians were self-sufficient and were not interested in taking new lands to create an empire. The Phoenicians did not have the resources needed to support an empire and preferred to focus on colonization. The Phoenicians had few natural resources and were more interested in trade and commerce.
