Proof read and help me with my the Odyssey summary??
The epic poem, The Odyssey, is about the great trials and achievements of mainly Odysseus and his crew. They were on their grand adventure for ten years as they made their way back to Ithaca. Odysseus displays characteristics that are both epic and heroic, but also very human. He is arrogant, cunning and very overconfident. The three different excerpts of the Odyssey we read were about the Cyclopes, Circe and the Sirens, and the great return to Ithaca. The first excerpt is titled Odysseus and the Cyclopes. Odysseus and his men arrive to the island of the Cyclopes, the prodigious one-eyed, uncivilized monsters. Even though Odysseus’s men immediately want to steal from the Cyclops’s cave, Odysseus will not let them. He acts like a good guest, but is refused of his hospitality. The Cyclops ate some of Odysseus’s men. The next morning, it is time for Odysseus to put a plan to action. He introduces himself to the Cyclops as “Noh Body” and offers plenty of wine and ambrosia. When the Cyclops gets drunk off the wine, Odysseus and his men blind him by driving a sharpened pole into his eye. The Cyclops tells the others that “Noh body” tricked him. Next, the men make their way back to the ship by tying themselves under Polyphemos the Cyclops’s sheep. Odysseus’s smart plans have been a success. However, Poseidon sends winds and waves their way, making it a challenge to travel through. The second excerpt is titled Odysseys Meets Circe and the Sirens. First, Odysseus’s crew lands near the island of Aiolia. When they leave a month later, Aiolos, the god of the winds, blesses Odysseus with a bag of storms and winds to help them get home later. However, the other crewmen see the bag and become curious, so they open the bag only to release the violent storms and blows the ship in wrong directions. Their next stop is the land of the Laistrygones, where one of the men is killed. Odysseus and the rest of men quickly leave the land of the cannibals. Next, they sail to the island of Aiaia, the home of Circe, the goddess of magic. Odysseus and half of the men stay to guard their ship, while the other half explores the island. Eurylochos is the foreboding, cautious one, yet the other men succumbed into Circe’s trap and she turns them all into pigs. Quickly, Eurylochos reports to the ship and warns Odysseus. Odysseus runs to help his men and on his way is visited by the god Hermes. He blesses him with a magical herb moly that will protect him against Circe’s magic. When Circe sees that Odysseus is protected, she’s very surprised and returns the men back to human form. The whole crew stays on Circe’s island for a whole year, where they eat lots of food and get distracted from their journey. After the year passes by, Odysseus asks Circe to help them get back to Ithaca. She tells them they must go to the Underworld. On their journey, the Sirens approach them in the Underworld, so they do what the prophet Tiresias has told them. Odysseus fills the men’s ears with earwax and they tie Odysseus to a pole as the men all sang the words they were told. The plan worked, and they were set free. The last excerpt is called The Return to Ithaca. It begins with Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, in sorrow of her husband’s absence. Penelope created a contest for the suitors where whoever could string Odysseus’ hunting bow and send an arrow through twelve iron axe-helve sockets would marry Penelope. They attempted the task and resulted in absolutely no luck. Then, an old beggar, whom was actually Odysseus in disguise, stepped forward. The suitors mocked him but Odysseus stringed and shot the arrow with ease. He was bathed by a female servant and granted beauty by Athena. Odysseus finally talked to Penelope and she realized that he was actually her husband from the signs he revealed to her. Penelope rejoiced because her desolation has finally been set free and she’s been reunited with her husband after several years.
