After the Normans conquered England, much of the land where the English country folk had hunted and fished was taken over by Norman barons. The new owners cut down trees and dammed streams with little concern for the environment. They built huge walled castle complexes. The old Saxon villages grew poorer and poorer. King John sent officials like the Sheriff of Nottingham to collect taxes and severely punish the country folk who could not pay them. Robin of Locksley decided he must do something. He began to rob the greedy Norman knights and sheriffs and gave the money to the poor. Some say he wore a hood to hide hhis faace and that is how he became know as robin hood. in those days before guns when arrows were important weapons no one shot arrows as skillfully as robin hood. which detail most clearly reflect the time period that produced the robin hood.
