Find the value of the height, h m, in the following diagram at which the tennis ball must be hit so that it will just pass over the net and land 5 meters away from the base of the net. Round to the nearest hundredth. Picture in comment

solve for h h/2 = (10+5)/5

my mind goes blank when i see these, i know how to solve i just cant figure out how to set up the problem. thank you lots!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome the triangles are similar, so the corresponding sides form the same ratio...which sets up that equation above

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tell me what you get for h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

same here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5h=2(10+5) 5h=20+10 5h=30 5/5=30/5 h=6 :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

basically, the larger triangle is 3 times bigger than the smaller (ie you multiply the smaller dimensions by 3 to get the corresponding dimensions for the larger triangle) So that's why the answer is 2*3 = 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very good, sorry just noticed you posted your work nice job

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

not sure, but the site may be glitching (at least for me maybe?)
