http://www.ushistory.org/us/25.asp http://kclibrary.lonestar.edu/19thcentury1800.htm After the American Revolution, American merchants went from exporting 75 percent of goods to England and her colonies to exporting only 10 percent of American goods to those same markets. When the British and French continued to threaten American commerce, President Jefferson and Secretary of State Madison responded with the Embargo of 1807 banning American trade with foreign nations. This embargo was a failure, but it did have one important result. Americans were forced to begin manufacturing goods they could not import. Woonsocket, Rhode Island and Lowell, Massachusetts were early settings for factories and the resulting industrialization was the start of major U.S. economic development. American growers supplied 45 percent of exported cotton sent to England. In 1808 John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company created the first American monopoly on fur trade in the U.S. territories.

You have to do a lot of reading. Basically in the 1800's was when the American Empire started to take off due to the creation of different industries. From Cotton to building of railroad infrastructure, and building of better shipments and war ships that defended the trading posts and used for the exploration of colonies. America took advantage of the labor and technology to advance. America was able to expand its reach even to Hong Kong and South East Asia. It replaced England as the Supreme of the Seas and Oceans with better and bigger war ships. Defeating Spain and liberating colonies in other parts of the world like The Philippines and Cuba also helped establish itself as up and coming Super power.

I'm just kinda trying to figure out how I'm going to start this essay. (For this essay, you will answer the following question by writing a five-paragraph essay: "During the early 1800’s, America became a strong nation because . . ." You must discuss three reasons which will answer this question.) Starting out essays is hard for especially coming up with thesis statements.

jot down the key points first

I guess I could just write about the war of 1812 and go on about how it made America a strong nation. I just need to think of three reasons on how so I can make my thesis statement. I have options to write about: •War of 1812 •Westward Expansion •Technological Innovation •Strong Political Leadership Do you know of any great websites that I could use as sources to find really good information on the war of 1812? It would be helpful(:

britannica encyclopedia

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

your essay should indicate 4 reasons that made the US strong in 1800 instead of having it as a persuasive, make it as informative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well she just wants 3 reasons and she isn't really specifying if she wants it as a persuasive or informative essay, so I guess either one would work.
