A screen is placed 40.8 cm from a single slit, which is illuminated with light of wavelength 659 nm. If the distance between the third and fifth minima in the diffraction pattern is 3.09 mm, what is the width of the slit? please!!!!!! help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What equations are you dealing with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im supposed to use the formula::: d = (L x m x lamba)/ y where y is the diffraction pattern and m is actually (delta)m between the two minima. it all looks like alien letters to me though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's lambda, L, d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lambda is wave length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is d the width of the slit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah pretty sure?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

i'm not sure but i thought d was the distance from the screen. and you know lamba is 3.09 * 10^-9 (i would convert everything to SI units) i think you have to calculate when m = 3 and m = 5 don't be too sure cuz i'm just learned this last semester and i'm drawing from what i learned.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think d stands for like the width

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

oh okay. my bad. and L is the length from the screen and y is the diffraction grating???? i kinda forgot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i think thats it?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

so just plug them in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mind giving it a try for me? i only have 2 more guesses to get it right :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only if u have time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like for m? what would it be ? cuase its actually delta m..?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

i might reply in a few minutes cuz i have a math question, but... watch out for units. (nanometer, centimeter) i would convert to SI m would be 2 because 5 - 3 you can try plugging them in..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I GOT IT THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mind checking out this multiple choice question really quick?? ill post it below right here please

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

mhm. it's aiight. i need to review before my ap test anyways :) can i do it in a few minutes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure! i just posted it!!

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

just one quick question. is the tape they're talking about the grey stuff in the picture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Ruling" would be equivalent to a slit. So imagine that you have a diffraction grating with 1000 slits, but the left-hand side is covered with a piece of duct tape, so only 500 are "functional" to start with. What happens when you remove the duct tape and fully illuminate the grating? It's asking about the distance between the centers of the lines. So, independent of whether or not the red and green lines get wider or narrower, do the two lines get farther apart, closer together, or neither?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what my teacher said for hint*
