What exactly is dubstep?

OpenStudy (michael_angel):

Dubstep is a new genre within electronic dance music. The best way to recognize a dubstep track or mix is by the reverberating sub-bass that is present in most productions. The sub-bass is reverberated at different speeds to give a sense of movement and insistence. The tracks are typically higher in BPM, ranging between 138 and 142 typically. The style does not favor four-to-the-floor beats, instead relying on spaced, syncopated percussion that the listener typically adds their own mental metronome to. Recent incarnations of the genre have found life through dubstep remixes of popular artists like La Roux and Lady Gaga. Newer artists such as Nero incorporate dubstep into their drum and bass and layering it with new vocals to create a more accessible sound. Most recently, singer Britney Spears has tapped into this rising trend in her song "Hold It Against Me," that features the sub-bass frequencies and syncopated beats during the bridge segment.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

^in simpler words, drum and base rhythms with different speeds and frequencies, usually sampling from different generes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh i thought it was a guy named dubstep remexing existing songs or something.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically dubstep is sampling existing songs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In a certain way? Like rap but not exactly?

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Hmmm, I wouldnt say that. Its usually creative, but there may be quick samples of another song within the dubstep song.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Heres an example of a dub song that uses samples https://soundcloud.com/official-flaic/doomsday-2012-flaics-set

actually, its an experiment. i forgot by who, but he created a smooth beat then made the "drop" to see what it would do. it was named the drop because it induced seizures and everyone would drop.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol somehow i think that is a lie.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol somehow i doubt u have done the research

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sounds impossible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sounds about right. if u have done your research then u would have seen that is how dubstep origionally came into place

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lots of origin stories are exaggerated.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

I like dubstep, its very danceable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@timo86m i did the research cuz it was bothering me. Born with an IQ eventually tested at 186, Skrillex is oft called the "mad scientist" of electronica. At only ten years of age, Skrillex discovered taht by playing peaceful, relaxing music followed by a deep bass not, he could cause people to instantly have seizures. Skrillex eventually named the note that causes seizures "The Drop" because his friend would drop on the floor when he tested the music. Being bornt he son of a nuclear physicist and granddaughter of Madame Curry, Skrillex used his parents labs to experiment on the blend of seizure inducing sounds he eventually named "Dubstep" Thank u and goodnight ^_^ lol

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Thats a fun story but I want to make it clear that Skrillex and nothing to do with the birth of dubstep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how would u know.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that just confused me more @mikaa_toxica13

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Because its obvious. Dubsteps been around way longer than him.

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

\(\Huge\text{^}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he made it as a teen. not now.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

.......dubstep was created as a new form of EDM that originated in the UK back in the 90s. You should probably do some actual research on the subject.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DUBSTEP: WUUUB WUUB WUUUUUUUB WUUUBY WUB WUB WUUUUUUuuuuuuuUUUUuuUUUUUB

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

Dubstep is a non-traditional form of music form that erupted from the underground music scene. Just think of Hip Hop, Rap, and Techno. On the other hand, you have traditional forms of music, such as Opera, and R&B. Specifically, Dubstep is a mix of Grime, Techno, Rave, Electro, and Randomness.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@Ashleyisakitty I liked ur simple definition just after that long paragraph :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ashleyisakitty some ACTUAL research ? i research every subject before i talk about it. like timo said, there are many stories of origion for almost everything. so how about u just accept the fact that this is the story i believe. just like i have no problem that u believe your story. try being nice and calmly comparing the stories and talking about it like sophisticated people and not throwing around insults as if u know what i do or who i am. have a good day.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there will be no fighting in my q

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Im not throwing insults at you lolwat. Im just saying your story was obviously not true in many ways.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant beleive i have to warn an ambassador :P j/k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so u think i jus made it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol nobody makes up something that uninteresting

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

no I dont think you made it up, but its obviously not true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in other words you think she made it up?

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

I mean she could have found some weird fanfiction or something..

OpenStudy (tanner23456):

dubstep is not real music. It's sounds generated by a computer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rap is generated by computer also. Most of it.

OpenStudy (tanner23456):

and rap is also not real music.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Its a series of electrical sounds put together in a rhythmic fashion. Many other genres of music use electrical sounds without even realizing it. There is no such thing as a genre of music that "isnt music". I suggest you open your mind a little bit.

OpenStudy (tanner23456):

haha, yeah, real music requires talent. Dub step, rap, hip-hop, etc. require none. Also, don't tell me what to do.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Obviously you don know what "talent" implies.
