In your case, you have a division and a subtraction. As you can see from the order of operations, division comes before subtraction, so you must do it first:
12 – 16 ÷ (–4)
= 12 - (-4) Since 16 / (-4) = -4
Finally you do the subtraction:
12 - (-4) =
12 + 4 =
16
