12 – 16 ÷ (–4)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The order of operations is: Parentheses Exponents Multiplication, Division Addition, Subtraction Do what is earlier on the list first. The exception is that multiplications and divisions are done in the order they appear from left to right. Then additions and subtractions are done in the order they appear from left to right. In your case, you have a division and a subtraction. As you can see from the order of operations, division comes before subtraction, so you must do it first: 12 – 16 ÷ (–4) = 12 - (-4) Since 16 / (-4) = -4 Finally you do the subtraction: 12 - (-4) = 12 + 4 = 16
