The sum of two numbers is 24. The second number is 6 less than the first. Find the numbers. Write a system of equations and solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + y = 24 and x - 6 = y From there, you should be able solve either by substitution or elimination. Let me know if you get stuck.

Probably the easiest way to solve this system is by substitution because you already have an expression for "y" (the left side of the second equation). Take that left side of the second equation and put it into the first equation where you see "y". Then you will have one equation in one variable "x". Solve for "x". "y" follows.
