get a common denominator --> 8x5= 40 numerator times what you muliplied the denominator with to get 40 in the case of 5/8 we multiply the numerator by 5--> so 5x5 = 25 or 25/40 same to 1/5--> 8x1 8/40 8/40 +25/40 =?
