Simplify y + y by adding like terms. can someone explain this to me quick!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 + 1 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you add like terms you just add the coefficient of them. So you are really adding 1y+1y to get 2y

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

But note that you have to add like terms: \[y+y = 2y\]\[y+y^2 \ne 2y\]\[y+y^2\ne2y^2\]

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

And for completeness, \[y+y^2 \ne y^{1.5}\]\[y+y^2\ne y^3\] :-)
