I really need help with this problem. Find an equation that models the path of a satellite if its path is a hyperbola, a = 55,000 km, and c = 81,000 km. Assume that the center of the hyperbola is the origin and the transverse axis is horizontal. I have the answer but would like to learn the steps,

OpenStudy (phi):

Is c the distance from the center to a focus ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do have the answer but that doesnt help with knowing how to do the problem. x^2/(3,025,000,000) - y^2/(3,536,000,000)=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that help? I'm not sure what to do.

OpenStudy (phi):

The first thing is know the equation of a hyperbola http://www.clausentech.com/lchs/dclausen/algebra2/hyperbolas.htm

OpenStudy (phi):

they say the transverse axis is horizontal that means this thing will look like |dw:1361980562858:dw|
