Mostly for its place along the major trading routes from the East and into Europe. The region it sat on was often referred to as the Golden Horn because of how much wealth flowed into the city. It was also the capital of the Byzantine Empire which flourished after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed, becoming a powerful political capital and was often seen as a defender of Christian Europe from the growing power of the eastern Muslim empires.
