Algebra 13 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

a + 14 < 13 i'd like to know if the answer to that problem is; a > -1

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. Subtract 14 from both sides. The inequality sign does not change direction. a + 14 < 13 - 14 -14 ---------------- a < -1 Solution is: a < -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, thanks. Are you saying the signs never change? since it stayed <

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they signs only change when you divide by a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The inequality sign changes when you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number. The inequality sign does not change when you add or subtract any number to both sides or when you multiply or divide both numbers by a positive number.
