Fctoring Trinomials?..... Please Help>> 7x^2+20x-3

pooja195 (pooja195):

Factor by grouping: multiply the first and last coefficient (7 x -3 = -21), then find two numbers that multiply to that and add to the middle coefficient (-20). They are -21 and 1. Split your middle term using those two numbers. You now have 4 terms. Group the first two together and last two together. Factor out what you can and find the binomial (x - 3) to be a common factor. Factor out the binomial (leaving 7x + 1) and you are done: 7x^2 - 20x - 3

Can you explain it better? Please @pooja195

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 7x^2-20x-3? @pooja195

pooja195 (pooja195):

yep srry i tried to explain the best i could

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that the answer? and it fine ill figure it out also why is it suppose to be 20? @pooja195

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry about my question on why is it 20 forget about that but what is the answer? @pooja195

pooja195 (pooja195):

7x^2 - 20x - 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+3) (7 x-1) See the attached plot. -3 seems to be a root. Divided the polynomial by x+3 using synthetic division and see what you get.

I dont think im suppose to graph it? @robtobey

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I usually plot these things as a matter of course. 0.006 seconds to do this one using Mathematica 9 on an Apple IMac. Your instructor is probably not expecting a plot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No shes not but i figured out the problem already thanks for you help @robtobey
