i would say it's a chemical communication system (O2/CO2 exchange) which controls aerobic cellular respiration. I don't think it controls "many" bodily functions directly.

Its false. Respiratory is breathing, like your lungs and such. The only thing it controls is your breathing, I don't think it controls 'many' body parts.
