I'd say the Battle of Midway. The Japanese intended to surprise the Americans again with a complex strategy designed to lure out their carriers, but it was the Americans (with the help of codebreakers) that discovered their plan and surprised them instead at Midway. The Japanese lost four of their carriers and thousands of experienced personnel in only a few hours of fighting, severely damaging their navy's ability to remain on the offensive.
