Give just a sec, okay? I'm helping someone right now. I'm almost done with them . :)
I'm on two different questions at once, ha ha. :)
oh ok! Thanks!
You are a great helper!
Aww, thanks. I'm almost done with them! :D But I've reviewed your question, so I can definitely help you with this. Am I correct in saying that you're studying evolution right now?
yup you are correct!
Wow, I'm good... :) So let's get started.
ok!
so i have no idea what the questionis asking... why is it asking about fitness?
Fitness, in this case, doesn't have much of anything to do with being in shape.
oh ok .. what is it talking about then?
Just a sec... typing... :)
sure :)
In biology, "fitness" is talking about an organism's ability to survive and produce healthy offspring, as well to continue the species. This question deals with natural selection and evolution. That's where you'll hear "the survival of the fittest." Look at the backbone in this whale. The backbone is being used to help the whale swim, and the whale needs it to survive. Whales NEED to swim. A whale can't produce healthy babies if it can't even swim! Vestigial structures are structures in an organism that aren't being used anymore, basically. The whale doesn't need a femur (leg bone) because it doesn't even have legs. However, the fact that whales have these causes scientists to believe that whales used to have legs, and evolved beyond them - which is proof for evolution, in their eyes. Do you get this?
that makes sooo much sense! I do get it!
thank you so much! You are the best! :)
Awesome! But don't forget, other scientists believe that the pelvis/femur in the whales are actually necessary to it's evolutionary fitness, because those are still there, even today. They just haven't decided what the purpose of them are yet. It's a big debate with scientists right now, ha ha. :) I'm glad I could help!!!
Thanks again! :)
you're welcome! Tafkas out! :D
