say x = # of hours a worker spends building a fence and y = total cost if you need to spend $10 for materials and $8 an hour for labor, then the total cost will be y = 8x + 10 for doing x hours of work If you have a budget of $50, then y can be at most $50 and this means y <= 50 8x + 10 <= 50 ... plug in y = 8x+10 you could then solve for x to figure out how many hours max the worker can work to stay within budget
