The German U-Boat attacks on US shipping in the Atlantic. There was also the Zimmermann note, a telegram from the German foreign ministerto the German ambassador in Mexico that was intercepted by British agents. The telegramproposed an alliance between Mexico and Germany and promised that if war with the united states broke out, Germany would support Mexico in recovering lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, an Arizona.
A secret coded message from Germany to their embassy in Mexico City was decoded, called the Zimmerman Note, in it Germany promissed Mexico that if Mexico invaded Arizona, Texas, & New Mexico, Germany would support its claim to the land. Mexico had its own problems at the time, lots of them, it had no inclination to invade the US, but the threat implicit in the note was enough to get the US to accept that Germany was a threat, an aggressor, and to join with the English against it. It was in early 1917.
The Zimmerman Telegram, in which Germany offered "substantial aid" to Mexico in recovering land lost in the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, if Mexico agreed to invade USA if America entered WW1 on the Allied side. America had become increasingly pro Allied and anti German since the sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915
