However, by the end of 1965, most soldiers fighting in Vietnam had been drafted into the war. Some Americans opposed this draft because they did not believe that the war furthered U.S. interests. Others criticized it as unfair. Draft boards granted deferment: permission to postpone or avoid military servicedeferments to college-bound men, for example, mostly allowing the sons of middle-class families to avoid service by pursuing higher education. This meant that the working class shouldered the brunt of the fighting
