Your piggy bank has a total of 47 coins in it; some are dimes and some are nickels. If you have a total of $3.95, how many nickels do you have? i have to write the answer exactly as tehy put it into the computer or i get it wrong !

You need to make two equations. Make d = dimes and n = nickels d + n = 47 10d + 5n = 3.95

Lets use substitution. We want to solve for n. d + n = 47 Subtract n from both sides. d = 47 - n Substitute that^ for the value of "d" the 2nd equation. 10d + 5n = 3.95 10(47 - n) + 5n = 3.95
