I would think consumption of food shows social status. All depending on what is being consumed would show how high up on the social scale you are. Which play is it? I just did the Importance of Being Earnest..

oh well it says it in the book in act II i believe when the two girls meet. Cecily asks Gwendolen if she would like cake or bread and butter. Gwendolen replies that she wanted bread and butter because cake is hardly seen in the best of houses.

Also one of the other ladies asked for cucumber sandwiches for her visit. the fact that Algy went along and got them for her would mean she was high in social status.
