From what I can remember, the Mongol invasion of China had some positive effects -- it eventually unified China into a powerful trading state and they founded the Yuan dynasty. Even after Mongol rule, their influence on Chinese society continued on thanks to the Silk Road, their protection of it while they were rulers, and the use of China's bureaucracy in controlling the nation.

For Russia, the effects were a lot more brutal. Their invasion of the Kievan Rus (the political body that made up what would become Russia) resulted in vast destruction. Cities were annihilated, including Kiev, and any semblance of unity was extinguished as a result. Instead of unifying the land, the Mongols made the local princes manage their affairs and pay regular tribute to them. They were literally sent back into the stone age and many lands were forced into farming for economic survival.

But the invasion did have a few long term effects on Russia that would shape it -- the destruction of so many rival cities and princes allowed others to rise up, such as Moscow. When a nearby city-state rose up in rebellion against the Mongols, they destroyed it leaving Moscow as the big boss of the region. It also helped that the Mongols allowed the Orthodox Church to exercise a lot of power which it centered in Moscow, allowing it to eventually become the capital of a new Russian empire long after the Mongols were gone.
