just expose your self to books it doesn't matter which and magazines and analyze the text, or if your not much of a reader watch movies. When you do this you'll pick up on common phrases, jokes, and pick up on sayings. and write down whats new to you and try using it in conversations. Thats what my mom did. I would go for books by Agatha Christie specifically the series about Poirot (i love those). Just look for any genre book you like or even a book you've read in your language that is also written in english so you compare the text and not be to lost when reading. Hope this helps out : )
