Factor x^2-3x-4

(x -4)(x +1)

You need two numbers that add to make -3, and two numbers that multiply to make -4. For this problem -4 * 1 = -4 and -4 + 1 = -3. So (x-4)(x+1). You can expand to check: (x-4)(x+1) = x*x - 4*x + x*1 - 4*1 = x^2 - 3x - 4.

ok thank you to you both
