A pyramid has a height of 17 in. and a surface area of 30 in^2. Find the surface area of another pyramid with a height of 13 in.

Medal will be given to whoever has right answer!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! How did you get that?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Well, the faces of the pyramid are triangles. The area of a triangle is 1/2 bh. If the height is doubled, the area will be doubled.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is 180, @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if each dimension is doubled, then the area is quadrupled

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the new area will be 4 times the original area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay cool! So the answer is 180!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what! So it has to be 360, then

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the original surface area is 90 the new surface area is 4 times that

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah 360

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay good. Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I cannot give you a medal! I already gave it to you.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

its fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

**I meant someone else! Sorry!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I gave him one because he is right and I was wrong. I overlooked the similar to part. Thanks jim.
