What purpose did the Dutch have for settling Hudson, New Amsterdam?

Well what most people don't know is the city still exits as New York City. The area was originally settled to have easy acess to the ocean. It was alos ideal because it had an ice free access route to a well known trading post.

You will find that most of the big port cities on the east coast evolved out of early settlements by one of the big nations at the time of the revolution.

Port cities tend to get very big because of the amount of people and cargo moving through them. It's generally just a good place for people to set roots and start a business, they know they will have no shortage of customers so they stay there. That keeps happeneing and you have a big city.
