yes, the negative * neg gives a positive. But they might want to see (-4)^2 as the answer.

So it would be (-4)^2 because I'm not actually doing the the problem, just showing it..right?

That would be my answer. they want to see "using exponents" so just do the least amount of work: (-4)^2 -4* -4 is the same as -1* 4 *-1 * 4 or (-1)^2 * 4^2 or 1*4^2 or just 4^2 but that is more work.
