@Emma0703 I think the Distributive Property is what you need for the posted problem if the instructions are to multiply 5 times the sum of a^2 and 9b. http://www.coolmath.com/prealgebra/06-properties/05-properties-distributive-01.htm
Look at the attached statement of the Distributive Property. 5(a^2 + 9b) = 5* a^2 + 5* 9b = ?
