The total surface area of a cylinder is the sum of the areas of the two bases and the lateral area. Each base is a circle. The area of a circle is A = (pi)r^2, where r = radius. The lateral area is the area of a rectangle whose dimensions are the circumference of the base and the height of the rectangle. The circumference of a circle is C = 2(pi)r.
