75 devided by 1 1/8
do you have a calculator? :)
if so, you need to type in your calculator 75/1.125
yes i have a caculator but i do not know hoow to enter it into my calculator to get the answer
75 divided by 1 1/8 = 75 divided by 9/8 = 75/1 x 8/9 = 600/9 = 66 6/9 = 66 2/3
i dont know how to put that fraction in my calculator either
well, anytime you want to convert a fraction into a decimal, all you have to do is divide it! for example 1/8 would be one divided by 8. that gives you 0.125. +1, obviously. so you have to type in your calculator 75 divided by 1.125 :)
the answer you will get is a decimal that is a very easily recognizable fraction. let me know what you get and if you need help converting it back. :)
okay thanks
hold on , im gonna type the question im trying to find out
tonys club is selling oranges to raise money. for every box they sell, they get 1 1/8 dollars profit. they have sold 75 boxes already. how many more boxes must they sell to raise 180 dollars?
oh, division is not going to help you here. You need to multiply!
75 * 1.125 = ?
is that all i do is multiply that
no, that's the first step.
\[\frac{75}{1\frac{1}8}\]First convert \(1\frac{1}8\) to a fraction by multiplying the denominator of the fraction times the whole number and adding that to the numerator: \[1\frac{1}{8} = \frac{8*1+1}{8} = \frac{9}{8}\]Next, rewrite the division by making it a multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisor. Reciprocal is just fancy language for "turn that sucker upside down" :-) \[\frac{75}{1\frac{1}{8}}=75*\frac{8}{9} = \frac{75*8}{9}=\frac{600}{9}=\frac{200}{3}\]At this point, if you want to make a mixed number, divide 200/3 and take the whole part as the number, plus the leftover part over 3 as the fraction: 200/3 = 66 with a remainder of 2, so the mixed number would be \(66 \frac{2}3\).
whats the second step lol
I agree that division isn't what you need to be doing in this problem...
take that answer, which should be 84.38, and subtract it from 180.
i got 95.62
after subtracting the two numbers
correct. now you have to find out how many boxes you'd have to sell to make that much. Do you have any idea what you'd do to find that out?
not reeally
Another way to approach the problem: When they sell a box of fruit, they get $1 1/8 profit. To get $180 profit, they need to sell \[$180 / ($1 1/8) = \frac{180}{\frac{9}{8}}\] boxes in all. If we can do that division, we can easily subtract off the number of boxes already sold. \[\frac{180}{\frac{9}{8}} = 180 *\frac{8}{9}\]We can easily divide 180 by 9 and multiply the result by 8 to get the total number of boxes to sell for $180 profit.
That "$11/8" should have been $1 1/8, helpful LaTex, ever my friend...
alright, well each box gives them 1.125. they need 95.62. so you need to divide 95.62 by 1.125 to find out how many boxes they still need to sell.
whpalmer4 i did what u said and got 160 and it was wrong.
That's the *TOTAL* number of boxes to sell to get $180 profit. They've already sold 75, remember, so the answer is 160-75 =
you should end up with 84.9955555555..... which can round to a nice, easy, 85 boxes. :)
No rounding required with my method.
oh okay my bad. thanks the both of u
and if you do what @whpalmer4 said, you would also get 85. so i'm guessing you missed a step :)
Both approaches get the right answer, of course. If you were planning a fundraiser, you'd probably do my approach to figure out how many boxes you had to sell (what? we have to sell 160 boxes of fruit door to door in this neighborhood? who are you kidding?) but for tracking how you are doing either is fine.
1 1/8 = 9/8 = 1.125 = 1.13 each box get them 1.13 75 x 1.13 = 84.75 (this is what they have already made) 180 - 84.75 = 95.25 (this is what they need) 1/1.13 = x/95.25 (1 box to 1.13 = x boxes to 95.25)cross multiply (1.13)(x) = (1)(95.25) 1.13x = 95.25 x = 95.25/1.13 x = 84.29 (I am rounding up) = 85 check... 85 x 1.13 = 96.05 It wouldn't work for 84 because that would = 94.92 (not enough)
If you're going to do arithmetic like this, there's no reason to round off numbers in the middle. 75*1.125 = 84.375 180-84.375 = 95.625 1.125x = 95.625 x = 95.625/1.125 x = 85
that is easier then rounding .
@whpalmer4 I was actually just thinking about that after I was done. :P rounding was not really helping at all.
