what is x^2-25 factored?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Do you know about differences of squares?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x + 5) (x - 5) did you want help finding out HOW or are you just looking for answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^2-5^2=y\]\[=(x-5)(x+5)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u do that, like what question did you ask yourself to get that answer @WTFork

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wtfork... LOVe your name lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know about the FOIL method? because basically factoring is just doing the opposite of FOIL. and when it's a perfect square, factoring is really easy. :) I am not that good at explaining but I can try if you are still confused. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@matineesuxxx Thank You! xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Emily, ANYTIME that you have a binomial in the form of \[y=a^2-b^2\] it is written as \[y=(a-b)(a+b)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so instead of foiling the answer you gave me, I use the answer I was given to get it in foil form? @WTFork

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, pretty much. And what @matineesuxxx just said is really helpful :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here is an example \[y=49x^2-16y^2z^2\\=7^2x^2-4^2z^2y^2\\=(7x-4zy)(7x+4zy)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks fork :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well emily, I hope we helped ya. Let me know if you need any more help! good luck! :)
