The needlework still has wonderful skill. Unlike the other things he finds, this one has art and carries a symbolic charge. Who said he made he made it up? He is trying to persuade the reader that it is real, and anyone who likes a romance knows that what is imagined and seen through dim moonlight _is_ in fact real.
