Oh it's ridge charesteristics...
you know how to pinpoint a location; you can use landmarks, such as my aunts house is this many miles from this department store or my sisters ballet studio is across from my favorite resturant??
well fingerprints have ridges that are positioned uniquely on every person; and thus when forencis try to match a finegrprint in the database it basically tries to make a map of the ridges and the location of the ridges in relation to each other...
