evaluate cot 290 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

represent 290˚ in the first quadrant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it has to be positive? would that make it 2.92

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then that is also quad II right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it must be represented between -90˚ ans +90˚

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it -0.36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its cot-70… take it as 360-70 = cot290=cot360-70 = cot-70 = -cot70

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my choice are -1.06; -0.36; 2.92; -2.75 How do I convert -70 to one of those answers

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Pick up your calculator. Enter tan 290. Hit the reciprocal button

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its-0.36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where is recip button?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

1/x button

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Or if you don't have a reciprocal button, when you get tan 290, divide 1 by tan 290

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Or if you recognize at the beginning of the problem that cot 290 = 1/tan290, you could enter 1 /tan290

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/tan 290 =.68

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Then you entered it wrong.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

On my calculator I have to enter 1, divided by, 290, tan, equals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i entered 1/ then tan then 290 then enter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using TI 83 plus

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Well try 1 / then 290 then tan then enter.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Or maybe you have to put parentheses around the tan 290

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what can I do differently to get right answer?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Did you try the stuff I suggested?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

parentheses appear autom

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I'm checking the manual right now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the recip. button? no-I can't find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i put 290 before tan then i get error

OpenStudy (mertsj):

From what I read, you should put 1 / (tan 290) enter

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Have you tried that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not par. around tan just around 290

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still get .68

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Then type tan 290, write that number down on a piece of paper. then type 1 / the number you wrote down Then when you get a chance, ask someone who knows how to use your calculator to help you enter it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I will type it into the computer and see what it tells me thanks for helping me

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yw

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You have your calculator set in radians. Set it in degrees.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Also your reciprocal key is the fourth row down all the way on the left, with an x-1 icon on it. Should be a black key with white lettering. x-1 means x^-1 which means 1/x
