a ball is thrown upward with an initial speed v(i) . when it reaches the top of it's flight , at a height h , a second ball thrown upward with the same initial velocity . a) decide whether the balls cross paths at 0.5h , above 0.5 h or below 0.5 h . b)find the height where the path paths across. answer a ) above 0.5 h b) 3/4 h but how ? :S
Well think about it like this...if you throw a ball up at SOME initial velocity...it is going to be traveling at a rate higher than gravity....gravity will then slow it down more and more until it finally stops....when it stops and starts falling again...it is not falling at THAT rate anymore...it is now ONLY subject to gravity...so it is falling at a rate slower than the initial velocity...thats why when the second ball is thrown up...it gets up to faster than the ball falling down ....if the initial velocity and gravity were somehow the same...the two would meet right in the middle...but in this case the second ball will get higher before crossing
