two urns contain white balls and yellows balls. the first urn contains 8 white balls and 9 yellow balls and the second urn contains 5 white balls and 9 yellow balls. a ball is drawn at random from each turn. what is the probability that both balls are white.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

okay so in total we have 8 white and 9 yellow in urn 1...so 17 total. second urn we have 5 white and 9 yellow...so 14 total the chance of choosing a white ball from urn 1 is 8/17 right? and from urn 2 is 5/14 so add those 2 probabilitys 8/17 + 5/14 common denominator is 238 14/14(8/17) + 17/17(5/14) 112/238 + 85/238 197/238 I dont know if it can be simplified but thats what I get

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Nope cant be simplified so thats the answer

thank you
