Have you ever heard of "object permanence"?

OBJECT PERMANENCE is the idea that just because we can't see something...doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

For example,
when you take off your jacket, and put it into the closet, and then close the closet,
you can't see your jacket anymore.

But you know that the jacket still EXISTS.

You get it?

That is OBJECT PERMANENCE.

In the paragraph,
we see that the child cries, when it can no longer see the teddy bear.

That's because the child thinks that the teddy bear has disappeared, into thin air.
This makes the child sad.
So, s/he cries.
