i need help with geometric progression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first term of a geometric progression is 81 and the fourth term is 24. find the common ratio of the progression.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you should know the general formula for a geoSeq for this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you tell me the formula pls??

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i could, but that would defeat the purpose really.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you have the material to study this, it should be in there. This is just an application of it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you might even have it in your head somplace, perhaps you can give me your best guess as to what you think the formula may be?

Parth (parthkohli):

Er...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well, that is a formula related to geo sequences :) but thats a sum i was thinking more along the lines of:\[a_n=a_1~r^{n-1}\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we solve this for "r" what does the formula look like then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just found it!! it is|dw:1362852433042:dw|
