find the discriminant...x^2+3x+8=5..the only reason this one is throwing me is because it isn't set equal to zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are you getting as the discriminant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ x^2+3x+8=5\implies x^2+3x+3=0 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Subtract 5 from both sides??

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

The "Descriminant" doesn't exist until the equation is in Standard Form and the parameters a, b, and c can be identified. Listen to @wio!
