What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The technology used to make them. Neither is superior to the other, but in the early days many burners could only write to one type. I think modern burners can handle pretty much anything you throw at them, though it's probably safer to read your burner specs than it is to take my word for it. :-)

DVD-R format is approved by the standards group DVD Forum (Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner). DVD+R format is approved by the DVD+RW Alliance (Sony, Yamaha, Philips, Dell, and JP). Notice Sony supports both formats regardless. The main differences between DVD-R and DVD+R are the recorder's defects management, the way the recorders format and rewrite DVDs, and the price.
