How do you find the surface area of a square pyramid with a slant height?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/3 Multiply by Base Area into Height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[=3\times \sqrt{3}/4\times(side)^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still don't understand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all sides of a square base pyramid are equal and if we exclude the base area then my answer is what i had posted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that all sides of a square base pyramid are equal, but how do you find the slant height? Do you find it the same way as just a regular height?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to make square pyramid join all the four vertex of square to a single point above the base and this will form 4 equilateral triangle with slant height as the side of triangle or the side of a square. there is a mistake in my formula which was given , u should replace 3 by 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1362945516442:dw| I hope u could understand by thid figure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you think you could draw a triangle and post it please? I really cannot understand just plain words. Here is what my problem looks like: |dw:1362945621838:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22 is the slant height and there is no height shown.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok no problem just find the area of this triangle and multiply it by 4 bcoz all triangles are congruent and the area of triangle is 1/2*base*height =1/2*10*22 and multiply above answer by 4 and u wl get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am trying the math now. . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

surface area would be 440 cm^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hang on, I'm almost done. . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, how do you find the height if only the slant height is shown?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in finding the area of triangle we need the perpendicular height and it is 22cm as provided by u in the figure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1362946421780:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the area of one triangle is 110 cm^2 but the pyramid form 4 such triangles so we multiply this area by 4 to get the surface area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the surface area of the triangles will be 440?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so what do I do with this answer now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now what do I do with the 440?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the surface area of pyramid is 440 cm^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we exclude the base area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if base area is include then the surface area of pyramid would be 540 cm^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, the area of the whole triangle is 540, am I correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

540 is the area of all 4 triangles plus square base

OpenStudy (anonymous):

On the back of my homework, it says this: |dw:1362946993683:dw| The question is: The length of the base of a square pyramid is 5 centimeters. The slant height is 8 cenimeters. What is the surface area of the pyramid?
