read the wikipedia article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Transfer_Protocol then maybe the RFC - http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc959
OpenStudy (dean.shyy):
FTP client is a type of transfer file protocol. It is a server side feature and you do not need to understand JAVA to create one. There are sites that already have the FTP servers up and running, and you can host with them through a fee schedule.
